Independence Day 2006 BBQ

As holidays in America are always family events, we invite American families to celebrate with us on the Fourth of July at the New Life Cafe, 85 Wensley Road, Richmond between 5.30pm – 7.30pm.  We encourage the kids to dress in red, white and blue and you can bring along any decorations you like to make it more festive! We plan to have music and a streamer craft for the little ones. We will sing the national anthem and hopefully spend a little time networking with other American families. Please email fred@nelsonusa.co.nz to RSVP and arrange your contribution to our traditional picnic BBQ spread.

The Fourth of July, or Independence Day, is the premier American national celebration because it commemorates the day the United States proclaimed its freedom from Britain with the Declaration of Independence. Very early in its development, this American holiday was an occasion for fanfare, parades, and speeches celebrating American freedom and the uniqueness of American life. Since at least the 19th century, Americans have commemorated their independence with fireworks and patriotic music. Because the holiday marks the founding of the republic in 1776, flying the flag of the United States (sometimes with the original 13 stars) is common, as are festive barbecues, picnics, fireworks, and summer outings.
